Federal Trade Commission - Business Center Blog Update

By Lesley Fair

If it were a 50s scifi movie, we'd call it "Invasion of the Serenity Snatchers" – illegal and annoying robocalls that disturb consumers' peace and quiet. The battle continues, of course, but we're happy to announce the winners of the FTC's "Zapping Rachel" contest held just a few weeks ago at DEF CON 22.

The FTC recently attended DEF CON 22, and challenged the tech-savvy to help us zap "Rachel from Cardholder Services" and her robocall buddies. How? The agency hosted a contest to see who could develop a cutting-edge robocall honeypot — an information system designed to attract robocallers, and help researchers and investigators understand and minimize illegal calls. Today, the FTC announced the winners, who will receive a combined total of $12,000 in prizes.

Dear BRS Stakeholder,

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today published two biotechnology regulatory actions in the August 28, 2014 Federal Register (FR).

First, APHIS is making a preliminary deregulation and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) available for a 30-day comment period in response to a request from Monsanto Company to extend deregulation from their already approved soybean (MON 87701) genetically engineered (GE) to resist certain lepidopteran insects, e.g., moths, to their new GE soybean (MON 87751) that resists the same insects plus the fall armyworm.

APHIS is also announcing the availability of an environmental assessment (EA) that examines potential impacts of issuing a permit for the controlled field testing of GE diamondback moths in order to test an insecticide-free means of reducing field populations of lepidopteran pests.

Comments on these actions received on or before September 29, 2014, will be considered. To provide comments visit:

http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=APHIS-2014-0055  (Monsanto's soybean)

http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=APHIS-2014-0056  (Moth EA)

A copy of the FR notices and associated documents for both actions can be found on the News and Information page of the BRS website at: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/biotechnology/news.shtml.
